Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri (v. 1937-2010) mena une existence nomade, au cours de laquelle il parcourut de vastes étendues des régions du grand désert occidental australien. Mr Giles, comme on l'appelait, était reconnu comme un homme ayant atteint un très haut degré d'initiation ainsi que comme un guérisseur traditionnel - Maparnjarra dans sa langue ngaanyatjarra - doté du don de voir à l'intérieur des corps, et même des esprits, d'autrui. Sa connaissance approfondie de son territoire et des récits de création qui y sont associés, appelés Rêves, a nourri la genèse d'une oeuvre picturale contemporaine. Ses peintures, dynamiques et rythmées, suggèrent le sens profond d'un contenu hautement secret et sacré. Son oeuvre puissante fait le lien entre deux mondes : la cosmologie ngaanyatjarra et le monde moderne en mutation rapide.

Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri (c. 1937-2010) led a nomadic existence, during which he travelled over large tracts of land in the vast western desert regions of Australia.

Mr Giles, as he was known, was renowned as a man of a high degree of initiation and as a traditional healer, Maparnjarra in his Ngaanyatjarra language, endowed with the gift of seeing into the bodies and even the spirits of others. An intricate knowledge of his country and associated creation stories, known as Dreamings, informed him in the genesis of a contemporary painting oeuvre. Dynamic and rhythmical pictures suggest the deeper meaning of the highly secret and sacred subject matter. His powerful oeuvre bridges two worlds ; the Ngaanyatjarra cosmology and the modern, rapidly changing world.
