C'est en 1987 que Michael Kenna voyage pour la première fois au Japon et depuis, l'Asie n'a cessé d'habiter son regard - un regard sensible et singulier qu'il pose sur les paysages du continent pour en révéler la beauté épurée. De la forme poétique japonaise bien connue du haïku à la peinture à l'encre traditionnelle, les oeuvres du photographe sont imprégnées de références aux arts de l'Asie orientale. Par leur puissance de suggestion qui découle du choix de la monochromie, de la célébration du vide fécond et de la simplicité formelle, elles substituent à l'encre des poèmes l'argent des photographies et s'offre à nous comme une véritable expérience contemplative.

Rétrospective thématique du travail de Michael Kenna en Asie, Haïkus d'argent met en lumière l'ampleur de ces influences en proposant un dialogue formel et esthétique entre une sélection de photographies argentiques de ces quarante dernières années et des oeuvres issues des collections du musée Guimet.

Since Michael Kenna first travelled to Japan in 1987, Asia has not ceased to influence his sensitive and singular gaze, through which he reveals the refined beauty of the continent's landscapes. His work is permeated with references to East Asian art, ranging from traditional ink painting to the well-known poetic form of the Japanese haiku. Through the evocative power of black-and-white photography, the celebration of the void, and the simplicity of form, Michael Kenna substitutes the ink of poems with the silver tones of his images, offering the viewer a truly contemplative experience.

A theme-based retrospective of Michael Kenna's work in Asia, Silver Haikus brings out the extent of these Asian influences through a formal and aesthetic dialogue between a selection of his silver-print photographs created over the last forty years and works from the collections of the Guimet.
